What is your signature scent? Do you have one scent that you wear all the time causing people to automatically associate the fragrance with you?
When I flip through the pages of US Weekly and read that a certain celebrity fancies a particular scent I can't help but wonder if that's all they ever wear, or if it's just their personal favorite they happen to save for a special occasion. Or perhaps what they really wear is something common like Pink Sugar or a Victoria's Secret perfume but they feel like they have to sound more sophisticated and scent-ually adept.
I happen to have a profuse collection of scents on my dresser, any of which I might wear depending on the occasion. Some I prefer during the summer when it's warm out side, and others are more suitable during cold winter nights. Some I've barely even worn, purchased with the intent to wear it for some special occasion which just hasn't come up yet --so there it sits, unused.
For the most part I go through scents like I do boyfriends. I fall in love with one, wear it for a while then get tired of it and move on to the next. Monogamy has never been my strong point --in relationships with men and beauty products.
But when it comes to calling one of my many adored scents a signature scent I just can't do it. To me it's like choosing a husband, the thought of sticking to just one perfume for the rest of my life gives me a panic attack. What If I choose wrong? What if I get sick of it? Am I treating this too much like wedding dress shopping, hoping I'll get that feeling that all glowing brides get when they find the one.
Perhaps my ex-boyfriend was correct in insisting I have commitment issues. Ironically he's the same boyfriend who once asked me to wear "that perfume he liked, the one I always used to wear," which inevitably took no less that an hour of spritzing through my dresser top full of perfume bottles to find the right scent: Colette's Black Musk Oil --truly one of my favorites.
Perhaps, like most of my beauty product woes, I'm completely overthinking it.
Perhaps it's time to step up and admit that it's okay if you've found your favorite holy grail mascara that gives you both volume and length yet you can't help but be drawn in to the allure of picking up a new tube of something different with hopes you could find something you love even more.
I guess until I find the Chanel No.5 to my Marilyn Monroe, or the Fracas to my Edie Sedgwick I'll just basque in my multi-scented perfume-polyamorous glory.. searching.
